< My Neighbor Totoro>

My Neighbor Totoro begins on one day in May when the sisters Satsuki and Mei move to an old house in the forest next to a large camphor tree.

In the cartoon, there are many fantasy beings visible only to the eyes of the sisters that adult cannot see. Big and small tree elves, Totoro, and even a cat bus. 

It was on a rainy evening that Totoro, who was only seen by her younger brother, appeared to Satsuki.

The sisters are held in their father’s arms and excitedly exclaim.

“I met Totoro! It's very big. It was scary!”

The reason why the mysterious beings are only seen in the eyes of children may be because only children can face fear with curiosity.

In what way will the sisters’ Totoro story be told?

Like a dad who dreamed of living in a ghost house, like a grandmother who witnessed and told the story of Makuro Kurosuke (black bug) when she was young.

Perhaps, after becoming adults, Satsuki and Mei will also tell the story of Totoro to their children.

<이웃집 토토로>는 5월의 어느날, 커다란 장뇌나무를 이웃하고 있는 숲 속 낡은 집으로 사츠키와 메이 자매가 이사를 오면서 시작된다.

영화에는 어른들은 보지 못하고 자매의 눈에만 보이는 환상 속 존재가 많이 등장한다. 크고 작은 나무의 요정, 토토로, 그리고 고양이 버스까지. 

동생에게만 보이던 토토로가 사츠키에게도 모습을 드러낸 건 어느 비 내리는 저녁이었다. 

자매는 아빠의 품에 안기며 들뜬 목소리로 말한다. 

“토토로를 만났어요! 굉장히 커요. 무서웠어요!” 

아이들의 눈에만 신비로운 존재들이 보이는 이유는 아이들만이 두려움을 호기심으로 맞설 수 있기 때문일 지도 모른다. 

자매의 토토로 이야기는 어떤 방식으로 전해질까? 

귀신 나오는 집에 사는 게 꿈이었다는 아빠처럼, 어릴 때 목격했던 마쿠로 쿠로스케(검정 벌레)의 이야기를 전해준 할머니처럼. 

아마도 어른이 된 사츠키와 메이 또한 아이들에게 토토로 이야기를 전해줄 것이다. 

두 사람에게는 더이상 보이지 않게 되더라도.
